Wireless Broadband Rural Internet Access - WISPA Headwinds

America’s Broadband operators face a critical problem of getting funding to develop and provide high speed Internet access in urban and rural areas. The current emphasis is on fiber-optic networks, which is not an option for some suburban and most rural areas. To help solve this challenge, the Wireless Internet Service Providers Assocaiton (WISPA) has created the “Headwinds” project, identifying the operational value and potential of fixed wireless solutions, which have proven successful in serving underserved communities.

The Carmel Group’s Chairman and CSO, Jimmy Schaeffler, moderated a session titled “Headwinds,” which drew a surprisingly good crowd, on the morning of Wednesday, March 6, 2024 in Oklahoma City at the WISP America trade show. He was joined by three prominent U.S. fixed wireless operators. Those were Elizabeth Bowles, owner and CEO of Arkansas-based Aristotle; Matt Larsen, CEO and owner of Nebraska-based VistaBeam; and Andy Main, CEO and owner, Redding, CA-HQd ShastaBeam.

If wireless broadband companies and equipment manufacturers fail to address this issue, they risk perpetuating a monopolistic environment and hindering innovation in the industry. This session provided valuable insights into the importance of embracing a hybrid fiber and wireless approach that fosters competition, technological diversity, and ultimately, better broadband access for all Americans. It covered the ongoing challenges and policy concerns faced by the wireless broadband industry.

Bowles stood out for her focus on funding and especially lines of credit sought by the operator community, much of which she is renowned for making less burdensome for applicants and actual borrowers. Larsen noted recent statistics that support the trend toward “cable becoming obsolete,” as hybrid fiber wireless providers increase their market share. And Northern California’s Andy Main highlighted his “mean and lean” peers’ ability to bring innovation and change to local markets far quicker than incumbents.

The next WISPA show will be in Las Vegas, NV October 14-17 2024 – WISPAPALOOZA 2024
